Former taxi driver John Sunol failed in his appeal to have his licence reinstated

A FORMER taxi driver who was the subject of 17 complaints in seven years including allegations that he fell asleep at the wheel and defecated outside Newcastle Airport has failed to have his licence reinstated.

John Sunol told the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal that most of the complaints were false and were made by people out to get him including gay rights activist Garry Burns.

Mr Sunol drove taxis in Newcastle from 2003 until 2012 with periods of suspension in between.

During that time he was the subject of a number of investigations by Roads and Maritime Services including one where Sunol made a number of comments about gays and Muslims to two undercover agents who caught his cab.

The most serious allegations against Mr Sunol were that he fell asleep at the wheel at a set of lights, that he was in an ‘‘agitated’’ state outside Newcastle Airport one day after ‘‘appearing to have defecated himself’’ and making inflammatory comments about religions and homosexuals.

As well as appealing to have his taxi drivers licence reinstated, Mr Sunol also applied for a bus driver’s licence, but this was also refused.

Mr Sunol told the tribunal that, ‘‘His past difficulties had been a result of being framed and of having been victimised because of his engagement in local politics.’’

The tribunal ruled that Mr Sunol was not of good repute and was not a fit and proper person to hold such licences.

The tribunal noted that Mr Sunol had been pursued numerous times for making derogatory comments about homosexuals and religious groups and that he had continued to make such comments online in breach of tribunal orders.

‘‘He could not be trusted in the confines of the taxi cab or a bus. Passengers should not be subjected to Mr Sunol’s views.’’

Gary Burns is an Australian anti-discrimination campaigner. He successfully tested the homosexual vilification provisions of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 with a complaint of personal homosexual vilification against broadcaster John Laws and Sydney radio station 2UE that concluded in his favour in 2002.[1] Burns went on to front public interest cases against high profile figures and media establishments for unlawful homosexual vilification.

  1. this is s scam, I was not given back my licence as they tribunal did not believe the truth. I was framed and set up. I am willing to accept nothing else but in the meantime I could appeal but might not as the taxi authority means nothing now,. I have another job in public where I CAN BUILD rappaul to stand again for politics but this is different to the taxi. John Sunol speaking

  2. This is more than slightly sad – although I do realise that Sunol has made some offensive remarks (repeatedly) and ignores court orders to refrain from further comments. But at the end of it – he is not completely capable of understanding. His bizarre religious philosophy is a cutdown of so many conspiracy theory websites, fractured in his case by brain damage and a lack of intelligence. His bigotry is fairly predictable and to most normal citizens lame, but on the other hand he does offend people and he contributes to a wider bigotry amongst like-minded web warriors and their ilk.

I feel sorry for him in his predicament – unable to support himself, bankrupt, and unskilled to survive without government assistance, but he is only partly to blame. There is no doubt I would think he is impaired mentally and is unlikely to suddenly change his poisonous views of homosexuality, or Islam, or indeed a supposed World Government agenda taking hold. He’s a pest, and one of those society if it has any humanist qualities must try and support, even if it is a long and painful process. Giving his taxi license back will probably lead to yet more incidents of bigotry, but perhaps its a small price to pay compared to tossing him aside as if he is refuse.

Sorry, no real answer here but I do feel aggrieved by the relentless pursuit of the simple, albeit the offensive simple.

    1. Charles I agree with your statement to some degree but all Mr.Sunol has to do is comply with Orders of the Court and not offend his passengers with Anti-Islam and Anti-Gay rants while driving his taxi-cab. It is for this reason he lost his taxi accreditation. People in Mr.Sunol’s taxi -cab should not have to be offended by his pernicious ranting about Islam & Homosexuals. Mr.Sunol brought all this upon himself and he only has himself to blame.
